Feather River Outdoor School
The Feather River Outdoor School is a four-day, 3-night residential outdoor school for all 6th-grade students at the UC Forestry Camp in Meadow Valley, CA.
Established in 1988 as a collaboration between the Plumas Unified School District, Plumas & Lassen National Forests, Feather River College, and UC Berkeley, the sixth-grade year is launched in the fall with a four-day, 3-night residential outdoor school experience at the University of California Forestry Camp in Meadow Valley. "Outdoor Ed", as this camp has long been known, has acted as a catalyst for outdoor education in the PUSD. In recent years the nickname has evolved to Outdoor FREd (Feather River Education) because you can get outdoor ed anywhere, but you can only get FREd right here.
During their time at camp, students explore what it means to be a "Mountain Kid" by studying the web of life found in the forest, creek and meadow habitats surrounding camp. They go on a night hike without light and take a 9-mile hike in the adjacent Bucks Lake Wilderness to the top of 7,017' Spanish Peak. Pioneers and Outlaws, group initiatives, two memorable campfires and an early morning Polar Bear Plunge round out the week's activities.
