Life Skills Classes

PUSD has monthly life skills outings for students with moderate to severe disabilities. Lynne Koeller, the SELPA program specialist, saw a need for more independent living activities and thus directed the organization of these monthly events. Koeller stated, “The purpose of these outings is all about encouraging independence and teaching functional life skills that will help the students care for themselves after they graduate.” Each month the different outings involve learning how to navigate the transportation system, by taking the local bus to the event and practicing cooking skills, by preparing a dish at their school sites the day before the outing. At the outing, they also do a seasonally themed activity.
